Phonics

'Children are made readers on the laps of their parents'

Emilie Buchwald

Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who can read more challenging material is a child who will learn. The more a child learns, the more he or she will want to find out.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a successful literacy programme created by Ruth Miskin. The training and support from Ruth Miskin Training, rated Outstanding by the Department for Education, ensure the programmes have the best chance of success in schools.

Our school uses Read Write Inc. Phonics for our children in Reception to Year 2 and for our children in Years 3 who still need support in their reading. All the children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their current level of phonic knowledge and skill. Teaching is very precise and tailored to the needs of each child irrespective of year group. These groups are fluid and children will move groups throughout the year.

We also use the Read, Write Inc. 'Fresh Start' programme for children in Key Stage 2 who have gaps in their phonic knowledge.
